SKU: BFT4KB Category:

The Boingfire BFT4KB is a fully assembled, fanless network appliance kit built around the Boingfire BFT4 system board and enclosed in the BFCASET4S black anodized aluminum chassis. At its core is an Intel® Atom™ x5-E3940 quad-core processor paired with 4 GB onboard DDR4 memory, delivering an excellent balance of performance and efficiency for small to mid-size businesses, branches, and advanced home lab deployments.

The system features 4 × Intel I226-V 2.5GbE LAN ports, 2 × full-size mSATA slots, 4 × Mini-PCIe slots, and 1 × M.2 B-key slot, enabling powerful combinations of wired WAN, Wi-Fi, LTE/5G, and additional storage or expansion cards. A pre-installed mSATA SSD (capacity configurable at order time) provides reliable solid-state storage from day one, while integrated SIM support allows for multi-carrier cellular deployments.

Designed as a compact, fanless industrial platform, the BFT4KB typically consumes only around 7.2 W at 12 V in typical firewall/router scenarios, making it ideal for 24/7 edge use where silence, reliability, and low operating costs matter.

The platform is optimized for open-source networking and security stacks, including popular combinations based on FreeBSD, OPNsense®, and various Linux-based firewall/router distributions, providing integrators with a proven hardware foundation for their solutions.

Key Points

  • Quad-Core Intel Atom Performance – the x5-E3940 quad-core CPU with AES-NI delivers strong VPN, routing, and security performance in a low-power envelope.

  • True 2.5GbE Edge Platform – Four Intel I226-V 2.5GbE ports let you go beyond legacy 1GbE appliances, ideal for multi-gig internet and fast inter-VLAN routing.

  • Expansion-Ready for LTE/5G & Wi-Fi – With 4 × Mini-PCIe and 1 × M.2 B-key slot, you can add multiple LTE/5G or Wi-Fi modules and build powerful SD-WAN or multi-WAN solutions.

  • Multi-SIM Flexibility – Support for up to 4 SIM slots makes it easy to design multi-carrier, failover-ready deployments for global projects.

  • Fanless & Low Power – Silent, fanless thermal design with typical consumption of 0.6 A @ 12 V (~7.2 W) keeps this box running cool and cost-effective 24/7.

  • Industrial Build Quality – Rugged black anodized aluminum enclosure, compact 189 × 157 × 29 mm size, and long-life design for demanding environments.

  • OEM & MSP Friendly – Custom logo printing, port labels, BIOS presets, OS pre-installation, and TPM 2.0 options make it easy to deliver fully branded appliances to your customers.

Typical Use Cases

  • Next-Gen Firewall / UTM Appliance
Deploy as a central firewall or UTM with multi-WAN, VLANs, IDS/IPS, and VPN for SMB, branch, or managed customers. Four 2.5GbE ports map naturally to WAN, LAN, DMZ, and management networks.

  • SD-WAN / Multi-WAN CPE
Combine wired WAN with multiple LTE/5G links, leveraging Mini-PCIe and M.2 modules and up to four SIMs for carrier redundancy and intelligent path selection at the edge.

  • VPN Concentrator / Secure Remote Access
Use the Atom x5-E3940 with AES-NI to terminate IPsec, OpenVPN, or WireGuard-class tunnels for remote users, branch connectivity, and MSP-managed VPN services.

  • IoT / Edge Gateway
Integrate field devices via Ethernet, serial, and GPIO, backhaul over wired or cellular connections, and apply unified security policies close to the data source.

  • Managed Router for MSPs
White-label the BFT4KB with your brand and pre-installed OS, then deploy as a standardized, remotely managed CPE across your customer base.
