Today, we’re announcing the release of the Boingfire BFN4 System Board, a compact, fanless platform engineered for edge networking, security, and industrial connectivity. Built for long service life and stable operation, BFN4 is an ideal foundation for solutions such as firewalls, VPN gateways, SD-WAN/CPE endpoints, routers, IP-PBX, and IoT/remote-site gateways.
BFN4 combines a proven Intel embedded CPU, dependable Intel Ethernet, flexible expansion, and practical appliance I/O in a board designed for repeatable deployments, whether you are building one custom appliance or standardizing hundreds of field units.
Performance built for security workloads
At the core of BFN4 is the Intel Atom E3845 (quad-core, 1.9GHz) with AES-NI support. This gives the board the right balance of performance and efficiency for edge workloads, including encrypted traffic, VPN services, segmentation, and perimeter security policies—without the power draw and operational overhead of a desktop-class platform.
Four Intel GbE ports for real appliance networking
BFN4 is designed as a networking-first platform with 4× RJ45 Gigabit Ethernet ports using Intel server-grade controllers. This enables stable driver support across common platforms and makes the board well-suited for:
-
WAN/LAN + DMZ segmentation
-
Multi-uplink failover designs
-
Branch security gateways
-
Lab environments and MSP standard builds
Storage and platform flexibility
BFN4 supports mSATA-based storage for compact, reliable system builds. For projects requiring alternate storage topologies, the platform can be adapted with appropriate expansion accessories (for example, adding SATA via expansion where applicable). This approach keeps deployments consistent while allowing solution builders to tailor capacity and storage performance to the role.
Expansion-ready for LTE/5G and wireless projects
Edge deployments increasingly require cellular connectivity and out-of-band access. BFN4 is designed with expansion capabilities that support modern connectivity builds, including LTE and 5G module options, and multi-SIM functionality depending on configuration. This makes it a strong fit for:
-
Remote sites and pop-up locations
-
Failover WAN connectivity
-
Mobile/temporary deployments
-
Industrial locations without a dependable wired WAN
Appliance-focused I/O for field reliability
BFN4 includes the interfaces you expect in an embedded edge platform:
-
RJ45 serial for console/management
-
TTL serial headers for embedded integration and troubleshooting
-
USB connectivity for provisioning, recovery, and peripheral support
-
HDMI output for install/bring-up workflows when needed
-
A watchdog timer to support resilient, unattended operation in the field
Built for long-term deployments
BFN4 is a fanless design with a wide operating temperature range and a low-power profile ideal for 24/7 environments, cabinets, and remote installations. If you need a platform that stays stable over time, supports consistent imaging, and simplifies hardware standardization across customers or sites, BFN4 is built for that mission.
Software freedom: build your stack, your way
BFN4 is compatible with a broad ecosystem of operating systems and edge stacks, making it straightforward to deploy the architecture that fits your client or project requirements. Use it as a dedicated firewall platform, a VPN hub, a compact virtualization node for edge services, or a custom Linux/BSD appliance for specialized workloads.
What’s included in the platform vision
BFN4 is intended for solution providers who need:
-
Repeatable builds and predictable performance across deployments
-
Low-touch provisioning for faster rollouts
-
Stable networking with Intel NICs
-
Connectivity expansion for LTE/5G/Wi-Fi scenarios
-
A board that stays reliable in long-life, always-on environments
